My work on 'Wispers' so far

Updated: Nov 12, 2019

'Wispers' is an RPG, puzzle game being developed by my friend Mitch Turner, a game development student. for this semesters sound design project, I am collaborating with him on this game by doing all the sound design for it. including the effects, dialogue, music and ambience.

More about the game

This is the description of 'wispers' sent to me by Mitch:

“Wispers is an RPG puzzle game stylised through the eyes of Autism. The player controls a unique “Wisp” character. This character is different from all other wisps and is shunned by all other “races” of Wisps. Your character’s Wisp must adapt to situations, learning how to change its colours and adapt to the other wisps so it isn’t attacked by them, and can learn from them. The player’s Wisp will have an ability that other Wisps aren’t capable of, showing the idea of Autism as a gift instead of a boon. The entire world will be shown differently to symbolise the outlook of a life with autism and the interesting and beautiful journey that it leads. To make this an entertaining game, there will be a combat system in place, as a figurative mental battle with certain situations, in which the character’s Wisp must be of the same colour archetype to inflict any damage. This colour significance will also be used to accept quests, go through certain areas/ doors and complete puzzles. Sometimes, the player will have to use their colourless form, as it’s a problem only they can solve as they are unique and special.”

To get to work on the project, I first needed a list containing the sounds to be added to the game. To create this list, I had a long discussion with mitch about the theme, direction and mechanics of the game. The key word that sprung up in this discussion was fantasy .With this in mind and a couple of references from him (Ori and the Blind Forest’ and ‘Animal Crossing'), I was able to develop a sonic palette which I will be using to keep a consistent theme across the entire games soundtrack. From here I created the first dope sheet.

This is just a small portion of the sounds I will need to create for the finished game but its enough to keep be busy for a couple days. the next blog post will be about the creation of these sounds.

Thanks for reading!
