Green Games Jam 2019

From November 5th to the 6th, I participated in the 2019 'Green Game Jam'; a 48 hour game developing challenge hosted by UKIE.

UKIE’s bi-annual student game jam draws from a pool of 3,000 students from 40 different institutions across the UK. Last year had 55 teams comprised of 255 students. Teams of five or six students are paired with industry mentors.

The goal of this particular competition was to raise climate change awareness, as well as encourage and inspire the future generation of game makers.

I was working with a team from Staffordshire university on a tree based, fantasy adventure game.

My job was to produce the soundtrack, and all sound effects for this game. The first sound I needed to create was the protagonist's footsteps.

The protagonist was a big walking tree, to create the sound of the steps, I first identified all the individual sounds a walking tree may make. The first being the creeks of the wood on wood contact, next was the big powerful thuds of the trees sheer mass hitting the earth, twigs and branches snapping, the rustle of the leafs, and the air being pushed out the way with its mighty strides.

This is the table I made to demonstrate the individual sounds of the footsteps and how I made them.

Once all sounds were layered together, it created a pretty convincing footstep that was full sounding, and fitting to the game.

This is how I made only one of the sound effects for the game. The rest of the information for this project can be found on the 'Green Game jam' section of the 'Sound Design Projects' tab of this website

Here there will also be MP3 files and video footage of the game so you can hear how it sounds and see how the audio is implemented with the games mechanics

Thanks for reading
