About

From November 5th to the 6th, I participated in the 2019 'Green Game Jam'; a 48 hour game developing challenge hosted by UKIE.

UKIE’s bi-annual student game jam draws from a pool of 3,000 students from 40 different institutions across the UK. Last year had 55 teams comprised of 255 students. Teams of five or six students are paired with industry mentors.

The goal of this particular competition was to raise climate change awareness, as well as  encourage and inspire the future generation of game makers.

I was working with a team from Staffordshire university on a fantasy adventure game, where you play as a big tree, traversing the area and exploring the dreamy open world

The sounds I created

The Tree

Creating the sounds of a moving tree created an interesting problem that involved some creative solutions. As there is no such thing as a walking tree I had to be imaginative as to what a moving wooden behemoth would sound like.

I decided to first make its footsteps and go from there. To do this I thought about the individual sounds the tree could make while striding through the forest; the creeks of the wood on wood contact, the big powerful thuds of the trees sheer mass hitting the earth, twigs and branches snapping, rustling leaves, and the air being pushed out the way with its mighty strides.

This is the thought prosses I went through with all the sounds I made for the game. After using recordings of creaking doors, snapping sticks, branches of leaves, plastic bags, old leather gloves, and a few other props layered together with effects, this is what I came up with:

Music

I Wanted to create a soundtrack to match this theme and instill feelings of wonder in the player. Toward the end of the track i bring in drums to increase the energy, and create excitement, before stripping it all away and leaving you with nothing but a piano and the peaceful sound of the forest.

Hope you enjoy!
